Self-Portrait of Patricia

 48” x 36”

Acrylic paint, charcoal, and ink on canvas

The artist stands in a completely darkened room, representing the infinite sadness in her soul. The only light shines from the window she is looking out of. Her eyes are focused on the illuminated golden city, and she pays no attention to the empty space in which she resides. Pointillist brushstrokes define the energy coming from inside of her hopeful heart. The pearls adorning her body represent the wisdom, dedication, and integrity of her dreams.

Both the cityscape and figure appear in other paintings of Patricia's. This is the window view of the scene in The Buildings Have Eyes. A mirror image of Patricia can be found in The Rescue of Persephone.

 The Buildings Have Eyes

60” x 36”

Acrylic paint, charcoal, and pencil on canvas

Patricia produced three paintings of the Art Deco Eldorado buildings during her 2018 trip to New York City. This particular vantage point is from her childhood friend’s apartment window on the Upper West Side. The building was named after the popular folklore legend of the lost city of gold, and represents Patricia’s quest for the fulfillment of her dream of being a successful artist in the city.

Immense brightness emanates from the golden steeples, as well as from the heavens above. Outlines of buildings arise from the impressionistic flurry of divine inspiration.

The snowstorm of light surrounds the people who dream. They are always there.

Guardian of the Light

60” x 36”

Acrylic paint, charcoal, and pencil on canvas

The energy of the New York City art scene has always fascinated Patricia. It is a place where one can spend the days immersed in Matisse, Picasso, and Van Goghs, then explore a Banksy in the evening. Art and sound overcome the senses at every turn.

This piece portrays the scene from the rooftop at The Whitney at dusk. Darkness descends upon the city as the sun sinks into the Hudson River behind the museum. The light from the streetlamps, cars, buildings, and fading sun, fight the approaching night. Energetic pointillist splashes of pinks and greens attempt to overcome the nothingness that is appearing in the distance. The war between darkness and light is always waging.

The main set of eyes can be seen at the pinnacle of the city. “I am he who guards the light. I will protect you from the frozen fight. Take the hatred, all who spite. Bury them into the endless night.”
